What Your Blog Can Do For You in the Search Engines

Your blog is not just a place to share your thoughts. It is one of the most powerful tools your small business has for getting found on Google — and most business owners have no idea how much they are leaving on the table by not using it.

Let me ask you something. When your ideal customer has a question, a problem, or a need — where do they go first? They go to Google. They type in their question and they start reading whatever comes up first. That is just how it works in 2026.

Now here is the real question. When they type in that search — is your business showing up? Or is your competition getting all that free traffic while your website sits there quietly doing nothing?

A blog changes that. A consistently updated, well-written blog is one of the most effective and affordable ways a small business can climb the search rankings, build trust with potential customers, and get found by people who are actively looking for exactly what you offer. And the best part? It keeps working for you long after you hit publish.

How Search Engines Actually Work

Before we talk about what your blog can do, it helps to understand what Google is actually looking for. Google's entire job is to give people the best possible answer to whatever they searched for. That is it. So Google is constantly crawling the internet looking for content that is helpful, trustworthy, relevant, and current.

A website with no blog is a static website. It has the same pages it had when it was built and Google sees very little reason to keep coming back to check on it. But a website with a regularly updated blog? Google visits it again and again. It indexes new pages. It starts to recognize your site as an active, authoritative source of information on your topic.

According to HubSpot research, businesses that blog consistently receive 55% more website visitors than those that do not. That is not a small difference. That is more than double the traffic just from showing up and writing about what you know.

What Your Blog Actually Does For Your Search Rankings

It gives Google more pages to index. Every blog post you publish is a brand new page on your website. Every new page is another opportunity to show up in search results. If you have ten blog posts covering ten different topics your customers care about, you have ten new chances to be found — on top of your regular website pages.

It helps you rank for long-tail keywords. Most small businesses try to rank for broad terms like "plumber Columbus Ohio" or "hair salon Gahanna." Those terms are incredibly competitive. But when you write a blog post titled "What To Do When Your Basement Floods at 2am in Columbus" — you are targeting the exact words a panicked homeowner is typing into Google at midnight. That specificity is where small businesses win.

It keeps your website fresh. Google rewards websites that are updated regularly. A blog post once or twice a month tells Google that your site is active, current, and worth indexing. A website that hasn't changed since 2021 tells Google the opposite.

It builds your authority. When you consistently write helpful, knowledgeable content about your industry, Google starts to recognize you as an expert. This is part of what Google calls E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. The more your blog demonstrates real expertise, the more Google trusts your site and the higher it ranks you.

It earns you backlinks. When other websites, local directories, or industry publications link to one of your helpful blog posts, it sends a powerful signal to Google that your content is valuable. According to Moz, backlinks remain one of the most important ranking factors in Google's algorithm. A great blog post can earn those links naturally over time.

Your Blog Works For You 24 Hours a Day

Here is one of my favorite things about blogging for small businesses. You write a post once and it keeps working for you indefinitely. While you are sleeping. While you are with a customer. While you are at your kid's soccer game on Saturday morning.

A blog post you wrote three months ago can still be bringing new customers to your website today. It sits there in the search results, answers someone's question, builds their trust in your business, and sends them to your contact page — all without you lifting a finger.

That is evergreen marketing. And for a small business owner who is already wearing twelve hats, having a marketing tool that works on its own around the clock is incredibly valuable.

Your Blog Also Powers Your Social Media and Email Marketing

One of the biggest struggles small business owners tell me about is never knowing what to post on social media. A blog solves that problem completely.

Every blog post you write gives you a Facebook post, an Instagram caption, a Google Business Profile update, and an email newsletter topic. One piece of content becomes five. That is how small businesses with small teams punch way above their weight in marketing.

Write the blog post first. Then share it everywhere. Link back to it from your social media so people click through to your website. Every click is a signal to Google that your site is worth visiting. Every visit helps your rankings. The whole system feeds itself.

What To Write About

The number one reason small business owners don't blog is that they don't know what to write about. But here is the thing — you are an expert in what you do. You have answers to questions your customers ask every single day. Those answers are your blog posts.

Answer the questions you get asked most often. If customers ask you the same question three times a week, write a blog post answering it. You are solving a real problem and Google will reward you for it.

Write about your local area. "Best time of year to repaint your home exterior in Columbus Ohio" or "What small restaurant owners in Gahanna need to know about their HVAC system" — local content is powerful for local search rankings.

Share tips and how-to content. Helpful content builds trust. When someone reads your blog and walks away knowing more than they did before, they remember you as the expert. And experts get hired.

Tell stories from your business. Customer success stories, lessons learned, behind-the-scenes looks at your work — these are the posts that build real human connection and keep people coming back to your site.

How Often Should You Blog?

Consistency matters far more than frequency. One well-written blog post published every two weeks is far more effective than a burst of ten posts followed by six months of silence. Google rewards consistency. Your readers reward consistency. Pick a schedule you can actually stick to and commit to it.

For most small businesses, one or two posts per month is a completely achievable and highly effective starting point. As you get more comfortable and start seeing results, you can increase from there.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blogging and SEO for Small Businesses in Columbus, Ohio

How long does it take for a blog to help my Google rankings?

SEO takes time — most small businesses start to see meaningful results from consistent blogging within three to six months. The key is not to give up after a few posts. Think of it like planting seeds. The more you plant and the more consistently you water them, the bigger the harvest.

How long should my blog posts be?

For most small business blogs, posts between 800 and 1,500 words tend to perform well in search results. The most important thing is that the content is genuinely helpful and answers the reader's question fully. Quality always beats quantity when it comes to SEO.

Does blogging really help local businesses in Columbus get found on Google?

Absolutely. Local blog content that mentions your city, neighborhood, and service area is one of the most effective ways to climb the local search rankings. A blog post that answers a question specific to Columbus, Reynoldsburg, Gahanna, or Pickerington customers is targeting exactly the searches those customers are making right now.

Do I need to know SEO to write a good blog post?

Not at all. The most important thing is to write naturally and helpfully about topics your customers actually care about. Using their language, answering their real questions, and mentioning your location throughout the post will take you a long way without needing to understand the technical side of SEO. If you want the full optimization done right, that is what Hayford Marketing is here for.

Can Hayford Marketing write my blog posts for me?

Yes — and we do it every week for small businesses right here in Central Ohio. We learn your voice, your industry, and your customers, and we write content that sounds like you and ranks on Google. Call 614-273-5303 or visit hayfordmarketing.com to find out more.

Why Do I Have to Verify My Google Listing Again Just for Changing My Business Name?

Why Do I Have to Verify My Google Listing Again Just for Changing My Business Name?

Written by Catherine Hayford | Hayford Marketing LLC | Columbus, Ohio

The short version: Changing your business name on Google can send your listing back through verification. You cannot fix it by starting a new listing — that usually makes it worse. And there is no phone number to call. Here is how to get through it without losing your visibility.

You Changed One Word and Everything Stopped

Maybe you rebranded. Maybe you dropped LLC off the end. Maybe you got married, or bought the business from the previous owner, or finally fixed a typo that has bothered you for two years.

You logged in, changed the name, and hit save. It felt like a two second job.

Then Google told you the profile needs to be verified again. Your update will not publish. Depending on the situation, your listing might stop showing up in Maps and Search entirely until you finish the process.

For a local business, that is your phone going quiet. And nobody warned you it could happen.

Why Google Does This

Google treats your Business Profile as a trust record. The name, the address, and the phone number are the three pieces that tell a customer who you are and where to find you.

Google states plainly in its guidance on editing your profile that if you change your business name after verification, you may have to verify again. That is not a glitch. It is the system working as designed.

The reason is spam. Maps is under constant attack from fake listings, hijacked profiles, and keyword stuffed business names. Somebody who takes over a legitimate profile and quietly swaps the name is a real and common problem. Reverification is one of the ways Google shuts that down.

Which means the honest business owner making a legitimate name change gets treated the same as a bad actor, at least until proven otherwise. It is frustrating and it is also the price of a cleaner map.

Verification Is a Video Now

If your last verification was a postcard in the mail, get ready for something different. Video has become the most common verification method, especially when a profile edit triggers a review.

You record one continuous, unedited walkthrough on your phone. Google generally wants to see your exterior signage, the street or surrounding area that proves the location is real, the inside of the space, and something showing you actually run the place — keys, a register, branded equipment, a business license on the wall. Sometimes it is a scheduled live video call with a Google representative instead of a recording.

Google walks through the current options in its verification help documentation, and the methods offered to you depend on your industry, your location, and your account history. You do not always get to pick.

This is harder for service area businesses. If you run a mobile detailing operation or a cleaning service out of your home, there is no storefront to film. You are proving your business is real through vehicle signage, equipment, licensing paperwork, and whatever else you have. It can take more than one try.

Do Not Create a New Listing. Please.

This is the mistake I see over and over, and it is completely understandable. You are stuck, the old profile is frozen, and starting fresh feels like the obvious workaround.

It is not a workaround. It is the thing that turns a two week annoyance into a two month nightmare.

You lose every review. Reviews live on the profile, not on your business. Ten years of five star reviews from customers in Reynoldsburg and Gahanna do not transfer to a new listing. You start at zero. That alone should stop you.

You lose your history. An established profile carries weight in local rankings that a brand new one simply does not have. Photos, posts, questions and answers, years of activity — gone.

You create a duplicate, and duplicates get suspended. Google is direct about this in its help documentation on duplicate profiles: do not create a second profile for a business you already have listed, even when you have moved. Two listings for one business violates the guidelines, and the system may suspend both.

It looks like evasion. Building a replacement profile while the original is under review reads to Google as somebody dodging enforcement. That is a trust signal you cannot afford to send, and it makes the eventual appeal significantly harder.

Fix the profile you have. Every time.

And No, There Is Nobody to Call

This is the part that makes people the angriest, and I understand completely.

There is no general customer service line where a person picks up and fixes your listing. Google routes almost everything through self service help articles, contact forms, an appeals tool, and a community forum where other business owners and volunteer product experts answer questions. Chat or callback support exists for some account types and some issues, but it is not something every small business owner can reach on demand.

One warning that matters more than anything else in this post. Search for a Google support phone number and you will find plenty of them. Most of those numbers are scams. They are lead generation traps or outright fraud, and business owners lose real money to them every year, usually while panicking about a suspended listing.

Start only from the official Google Business Profile Help Center. Never from a search ad, never from an unsolicited call, and never from a number on a third party site. If somebody calls you claiming to be from Google about your listing, hang up.

What to Actually Do

Make the name match the real world. Your profile name should match your signage, your paperwork, your website, and your business filing. If your sign says Miller Plumbing but your listing says Miller Plumbing Drain Cleaning Water Heater Repair Columbus, you are asking for a suspension, not just a reverification. Drop the keyword stuffing before you submit.

Update everything else first. Change the sign, the website, the Secretary of State filing, your invoices, and your other directory listings before you touch Google. When Google goes looking for corroboration, you want it to find the new name everywhere.

Change one thing at a time. Editing your name, address, phone, and category in the same afternoon looks exactly like a hijacking attempt. Space major edits out over weeks.

Respond fast when Google asks. The longer a reverification request sits, the longer you are invisible. Do the video the day you get the request.

Gather your proof before you file anything. Business license, utility bill or lease with the business name and address, photos of permanent signage, vehicle wraps, branded equipment. If you end up appealing, having this ready the first time matters more than filing quickly.

File once and wait. Submitting appeal after appeal, or making more edits while a review is open, slows everything down. Patience is genuinely part of the strategy here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Google Business Profile reverification take?

A clean video verification is often reviewed within a few business days. If your submission is unclear or your proof does not match, expect it to stretch out. Full suspension appeals are a different animal and can run several weeks. There is no way to speed it up, and no one to escalate to.

Will I lose my reviews when I change my business name?

No. Renaming an existing profile keeps every review attached. You only lose reviews if you abandon the profile and build a new one, which is exactly why you should never do that. Your review history is one of the most valuable assets your business owns.

Is my business invisible on Google while I wait?

It depends on what happened. Sometimes the listing stays live and only your pending edits are held back. In more serious cases the profile is pulled from Search and Maps until you finish. Check by searching your business in an incognito window, which shows you what a customer actually sees rather than what your dashboard shows you.

I work out of my home in Pickerington. How do I do a video verification with no storefront?

Film what proves the business is real and yours. A wrapped or magnet signed work vehicle, your tools and equipment, branded materials, your license or registration, invoices with the business name. Service area businesses do get verified regularly. It just tends to take more documentation and sometimes more than one attempt.

Can I pay someone to call Google and fix this for me?

Nobody has a special line into Google. Anyone claiming an inside connection is not being honest with you. What a marketing professional can genuinely do is diagnose what triggered the problem, prepare a submission that actually matches Google guidelines, and handle the follow up so you can go back to running your business.

Should I just skip Google Business Profile if it is this much hassle?

No. For a local business in Central Ohio, your Google Business Profile is frequently the very first thing a customer sees, often before your website. It drives calls, directions, and walk in traffic, and it costs nothing. The hassle is real but the visibility is worth far more.

Should I call my existing Customers?

When Did You Last Call Your Existing Customers? The Most Overlooked Marketing Tool in Your Business

The most powerful marketing tool you have is sitting right there on your desk. It's your phone. And your existing customers are waiting for you to use it.

I want to ask you something and I really want you to think about it before you answer.

When was the last time you picked up the phone and called one of your existing customers? Not to sell them something. Not to pitch them on a new service. Just to check in. To say hello. To see how they are doing.

If you are like most small business owners, the honest answer is that it has been a while. Maybe a long while. And that is one of the most costly marketing mistakes you can make — even though it doesn't cost you a single dollar.

Your Existing Customers Are Your Greatest Asset

Small business owners spend an enormous amount of time, energy, and money chasing brand new customers. And while bringing in new business is absolutely important, there is a goldmine sitting right under your nose that most business owners completely ignore.

Your existing customers already know you. They already trust you. They already chose you once over every other option they had. According to Forbes, it costs five times more to acquire a new customer than it does to retain an existing one. And the probability of selling to an existing customer is up to 70% — compared to just 5 to 20% for a brand new prospect.

Read that again. Five times more expensive to get a new customer. And yet most small businesses put 90% of their marketing effort into new customer acquisition and almost none into the people who have already proven they will pay them. That is a problem worth fixing — and the fix is simpler than you think.

The Simple Phone Call That Changes Everything

Here is what I tell every single client I work with. Pick up the phone this week and call five customers you haven't talked to in a while. Not an email. Not a text. A real phone call from a real human being.

And when they pick up, don't make it a sales call. Make it a human call. Say something like this:

"Hey, I was just thinking about you. How is everything going? How did that project turn out? Is there anything I can help you with?"

That is it. That is the whole script. No pitch. No agenda. Just a genuine, human conversation with someone who has already invested in your business.

You will be amazed what happens next. Some of them will have a new need you didn't even know about. Some will refer you to a friend or colleague on the spot. Some will simply appreciate that you called — and that appreciation builds the kind of loyalty that keeps them coming back for years.

5 Things That Happen When You Call Your Existing Customers

1. You uncover hidden opportunities. Businesses change. Needs evolve. The customer who hired you for one small job six months ago might have a much bigger need today — one they haven't told anyone about yet because nobody has thought to ask.

2. You generate referrals without asking for them. When you reach out just to check in — genuinely, with no agenda — customers naturally want to help you back. That often means telling a friend, a colleague, or a family member about your business without you ever having to ask.

3. You stay top of mind. Out of sight is out of mind in business. A quick phone call puts you right back at the front of their thinking. So when they or someone they know needs what you offer, your name is the first one that comes up.

4. You build loyalty that advertising cannot buy. No ad campaign in the world can replicate the feeling of a business owner taking time out of their day just to check in. That personal touch is what separates the businesses that survive from the ones that thrive.

5. You remind them why they chose you. Sometimes customers drift away not because they were unhappy but simply because life got busy and they forgot. A phone call brings them back and reminds them that you are still there, still caring, still the right choice.

This Is Old School Marketing That Still Works Better Than Almost Anything Else

I have been in sales and marketing for over 35 years. I have watched trends come and go. I have seen businesses pour money into every shiny new marketing tool imaginable. And I will tell you with complete confidence that the personal phone call to an existing customer is still one of the highest-return marketing activities a small business can do.

It costs nothing but your time. It requires no technical knowledge. It doesn't need a big budget or a fancy strategy. It just needs you — showing up like a real human being for the people who have already trusted you with their business.

According to Help Scout research, 70% of buying experiences are based on how the customer feels they are being treated. Not price. Not product. How they feel. A phone call that says "I was thinking about you" is one of the most powerful ways to make a customer feel valued.

How to Build a Simple Customer Follow-Up System

You don't need expensive software or a complicated CRM to start doing this. Here is a simple system any small business owner can put in place this week:

Make a list. Write down the names of your top 20 customers — the ones who have spent the most with you, referred others to you, or who you simply haven't heard from in a while.

Set a weekly goal. Commit to calling five customers every single week. Not when you feel like it. Every week. Put it on your calendar like it's a meeting — because it is.

Keep it short and genuine. Five minutes is enough. You are not trying to have a long conversation. You are just touching base, showing you care, and opening the door.

Take notes after every call. Write down what they told you — what they are working on, what they might need next, what challenges they mentioned. This information is pure gold for future conversations.

Follow through on what you said. If you told them you would send them information, send it. If you said you would check back in next month, check back in. Reliability is the foundation of every lasting business relationship.

The Bottom Line

The phone call costs you nothing but five minutes and a little courage. The return could be everything.

Do not let your existing customers feel forgotten. Do not pour all your energy into strangers when the people who already believe in you are sitting there waiting to hear from you.

Pick up the phone. Make the call. Build the relationship. And watch what happens to your business when the people who already know you start talking about you to everyone they know. That is how real, lasting growth is built — one genuine conversation at a time. And if you need help building a marketing strategy around your existing customers and finding new ones, Hayford Marketing LLC is here to help. Call us at 614-273-5303.

Frequently Asked Questions for Small Business Owners in Columbus, Ohio

How often should I follow up with existing customers?

For most small businesses, a quarterly check-in call is a great starting point. High-value customers or those you work with regularly may warrant a monthly touchpoint. The goal is to stay top of mind without becoming a nuisance — genuine and consistent beats frequent and pushy every time.

What do I say when I call a customer just to check in?

Keep it simple and genuine. Tell them you were thinking about them, ask how everything is going, and reference something specific from your last interaction if you can. The key is to make them feel valued — not sold to. Most customers are genuinely surprised and appreciative when a business takes the time to call with no agenda.

Is customer retention really more cost effective than finding new customers in Columbus?

Absolutely. Research consistently shows that retaining an existing customer costs a fraction of what it takes to acquire a new one. For small businesses in Columbus, Reynoldsburg, Gahanna, and Pickerington — where your reputation travels fast through the community — a loyal customer who refers others is worth more than almost any advertising you could run.

How can Hayford Marketing help me stay connected with my existing customers?

We offer appointment telemarketing services, email marketing through Constant Contact, social media management, and one-on-one marketing consulting — all designed to help you stay visible and connected with the customers who already know and trust you. No long-term contracts. Payment plans available. Call 614-273-5303 to get started.

What other free marketing strategies can small businesses in Central Ohio use right now?

Beyond calling existing customers, your Google Business Profile is one of the most powerful free tools available. Consistent Facebook and Instagram posts, asking happy customers for reviews, and being active in your local community on platforms like Nextdoor are all completely free and highly effective for small businesses throughout Central Ohio.

Having a Website Does Not Mean You Will Get Traffic

Written by Catherine Hayford | Hayford Marketing LLC | Columbus, Ohio

The short version: Building a website is step one. Getting people to actually find it is a completely different job — and nobody selling you a website platform is in a hurry to tell you that.

The Promise You Were Sold

You signed up for a website builder. The sales page said something like get found online or drive traffic to your business. You picked a template, added your hours, uploaded a photo of the shop, and hit publish.

Then you waited. And the phone did not ring.

Here is the part the platforms and the big marketing companies leave out of the pitch. A website is a destination, not a road. Publishing one does not send anybody to it. You have just built a beautiful store on a street with no signs, no sidewalk, and no address listed anywhere.

The internet is enormous. Google processes billions of searches a day, and for nearly every commercial search term there is a line of businesses paying for the top spots. If you are not running paid ads, you are competing for what is left underneath them — and you only win that space by earning it.

Why Nobody Tells You This

Because it is not good for business. A website platform makes money on your monthly subscription whether one person visits or ten thousand do. A big agency makes money on the build. Once the site is live, the hard part is yours.

I am telling you because I would rather you hear it from me now than figure it out six months and a few thousand dollars later. Small business owners have to work to get seen. There is no shortcut, but there is a plan.

Ten Real Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Website

1. Post to social media every single day

Not once a week. Not when you remember. Every day. Social platforms reward consistency, and every post is another chance for somebody in Reynoldsburg or Gahanna to see your name. Keep posts short, useful, and human. Then link back to your site.

2. Claim and work your Google Business Profile

This is the single most overlooked free tool in local marketing. Set it up, verify it, add real photos, post updates weekly, and ask for reviews. Google gives local businesses real visibility here, and it costs nothing. Start at Google Business Profile.

3. Use keywords real people actually type

Your customers are not searching for premier full service solutions provider. They are searching for plumber near me Pickerington or best breakfast Columbus Ohio. Write your page titles, headings, and body copy in the words your customers use. Google publishes plain-English guidance on this in its SEO Starter Guide.

4. Your website has to have a blog now

A five page website is a brochure. It sits there. A blog gives Google something new to index and gives AI search tools something to quote when somebody asks a question in your industry. Every post is another door into your site. Answer the questions your customers actually ask you on the phone.

5. Print flyers and hand them out

Old school still works, especially locally. Put your website address and a reason to visit on every flyer. Leave them at the coffee shop, the barber, the community board. Offline effort creates online traffic.

6. Network at events

Chamber events, business breakfasts, trade shows, local mixers. People buy from people they have met. The Columbus Chamber of Commerce and your local suburb chambers run these regularly.

7. Volunteer in your community

Sponsor the youth team. Help at the food pantry. Show up for the neighborhood cleanup. This is not a marketing tactic first — it is the right thing to do — but people remember businesses that show up for the community. Those mentions and local links matter to Google too.

8. Get listed everywhere that matters

Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Nextdoor, industry directories, chamber directories. Make sure your name, address, and phone number match exactly everywhere. Inconsistent listings confuse search engines and cost you rankings.

9. Build an email list and actually use it

Your email list is the only audience you truly own. Social platforms change their rules constantly. Email lands in the inbox every time. Send something useful once or twice a month with a link back to your site.

10. Consider a radio, TV, or local print spot

Local radio and community papers in Central Ohio are more affordable than most owners expect. They will not replace digital, but they build name recognition — and name recognition is what makes somebody search for you directly instead of your competitor.

What About Paid Ads?

Paid ads work. That is exactly why the top of every search results page is full of them. If you have the budget, Google Ads and Facebook Ads can put you in front of the right people fast.

But ads are rented traffic. The day you stop paying, it stops. The organic work above is owned traffic — it compounds over time and keeps working after the spending stops. The businesses that win do both. Ads for right now, organic for the long haul.

The Honest Bottom Line

Traffic is earned. It is earned daily, in small consistent efforts, by people who keep showing up when it is not exciting anymore. There is no button on any platform that does this for you.

If that feels like a lot on top of already running your business, you are not wrong. That is the whole reason agencies like mine exist. Free help is out there too — the U.S. Small Business Administration, SCORE mentoring, and the Ohio Small Business Development Centers all offer no-cost guidance to Ohio business owners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get traffic to a new small business website in Columbus, Ohio?

Realistically, expect three to six months of consistent work before organic traffic becomes steady, and longer in competitive industries. Paid ads and a fully optimized Google Business Profile will produce results faster, often within weeks. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is selling you something.

Do I really need a blog if I own a small local business?

Yes. A blog is how you show Google and AI search tools that your site is active and that you know your subject. It also lets you rank for the specific questions your customers ask, which a static homepage never will. Two posts a month beats twelve posts in January and nothing after.

Is Google Business Profile more important than my website for local Columbus searches?

For local searches, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees, and it can drive calls and directions before they ever click through. But it works best paired with a real website. The profile earns attention. The website earns trust and closes the sale.

Can I do all of this myself, or do I need to hire someone?

You can absolutely do it yourself. Every item on this list is learnable and most of it is free. The real question is whether you have the hours. Most owners I work with in Reynoldsburg, Gahanna, and Pickerington are already working sixty hour weeks. Hiring help is about buying back time, not about being incapable.

What if marketing feels overwhelming because of ADHD or dyslexia?

Then we slow it down and break it into small pieces. I work with a lot of neurodiverse business owners, and my approach is plain language, written steps, and as many walkthroughs as it takes. No jargon, no rushing, no making you feel bad for asking again.

How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile (Free Step by Step Guide)

If a customer in Columbus pulls out their phone and searches for what you sell, one thing decides whether they find you or your competitor.

It is not your website. It is not your Facebook page.

It is your Google Business Profile — the free listing that puts you on Google Maps and in the local results at the top of the page.

It costs nothing. It takes about twenty minutes. And most small business owners either skip it or set it up wrong.

Grab the Free Guide

We wrote a plain English, step by step walkthrough that takes you from a blank screen to a live, verified listing.

No marketing jargon. No sales pitch buried in the middle. Just the actual clicks, in order, with the traps called out before you hit them.

The download button is right below this post.

No email required. No form to fill out. It is just yours.

Why This Listing Matters More Than You Think

When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a map with three businesses pinned on it before it shows a single website.

Those three spots come from Google Business Profiles. If you do not have one, you are not in the running.

Your profile is also where your reviews live. Research from BrightLocal's annual local consumer review survey has shown year after year that the large majority of people read online reviews before choosing a local business. Those reviews attach to your profile, not your website.

So a complete profile does three jobs at once. It gets you found, it builds trust, and it gives people a one tap way to call you.

What Is Inside the Guide

Part 1: Signing in and getting started

Which email account to use and why it matters so much. Whatever email creates the profile owns it. Moving ownership later means support tickets and waiting periods.

Part 2: The address and service area questions

This is where people get tripped up. If you run your business out of your home and travel to customers, you do not have to publish your home address. The guide walks you through exactly which button to click so your address stays private.

Part 3: Verification

Nothing goes live until Google confirms you are real. Lately that often means recording a short video on your phone. The guide tells you what to have ready before you hit record, and what to do if you get rejected the first time. Google also publishes its own verification help page if you want the official version.

Part 4: Filling the profile out properly

Most people stop the second they get verified. That is the mistake. A complete profile with a real description, a full service list, and ten or more photos beats a bare one every time. There is a fill in the blank description template in the guide.

Part 5: Keeping it alive

A profile nobody touches slowly slides down the results. Reviews, replies, posts, and a quarterly check take a few minutes and hold your spot.

—————————--

The Three Mistakes That Cause the Most Trouble

1. Setting it up under a personal Gmail. Use the business email. Every time.

2. Creating a second listing when one already exists. Google sometimes builds a listing for you from public data. If your business already shows up in the dropdown, claim it. Do not make a duplicate. Duplicates compete with each other and one of them usually gets suspended.

3. Stuffing keywords into the business name. Adding words like "Best Plumber Columbus" to your name violates Google's guidelines for representing your business and is one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended. Use your real name. The keywords belong in your description and services.

Avoid those three and the rest is mostly just filling in boxes.

Never Turn Down Work: Why Every Small Job Is a Big Opportunity

That small job you almost passed on? It might be the best business decision you ever make.

I want to talk about something that every small business owner needs to hear — especially when times are slow and you are tempted to cherry-pick only the big jobs.

Never turn down work. Never.

I don't care if the job barely covers your gas money. I don't care if the customer seems like a small fish. I don't care if you've had a long week and a $200 job feels like it's not worth the drive. Take it. Show up. Do great work. Because you have absolutely no idea what that one small job might open up for you.

The $200 Job That Became $5,000

Let me paint you a picture. A plumber gets a call from a small restaurant owner. It is a minor job — a quick fix, nothing complicated. The payout? Maybe $200. Not exactly the job of the year. His schedule is tight and part of him wonders if it is even worth it.

But he takes it. He shows up on time. He does the job right. He is professional, friendly, and treats that little restaurant like it is his most important account.

While he is there, the restaurant owner is chatting with one of his regulars — a guy who comes in every single week, sits at the same table, orders the same thing. Just a familiar face. Small talk.

Turns out that regular owns one of the biggest car dealerships in the city. And that dealership? It has a serious plumbing problem that has been dragging on for weeks.

The restaurant owner looks at the plumber, looks at his regular, and says — "I've got just the guy for you." That $200 job just became a $5,000 job. Not because the plumber got lucky — because he showed up, did great work, and let his reputation do the rest.

"Your reputation is built one job at a time. Don't skip the
