How to Set Up Your Google Business Profile (Free Step by Step Guide)

If a customer in Columbus pulls out their phone and searches for what you sell, one thing decides whether they find you or your competitor.

It is not your website. It is not your Facebook page.

It is your Google Business Profile — the free listing that puts you on Google Maps and in the local results at the top of the page.

It costs nothing. It takes about twenty minutes. And most small business owners either skip it or set it up wrong.

Grab the Free Guide

We wrote a plain English, step by step walkthrough that takes you from a blank screen to a live, verified listing.

No marketing jargon. No sales pitch buried in the middle. Just the actual clicks, in order, with the traps called out before you hit them.

The download button is right below this post.

No email required. No form to fill out. It is just yours.

Why This Listing Matters More Than You Think

When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows a map with three businesses pinned on it before it shows a single website.

Those three spots come from Google Business Profiles. If you do not have one, you are not in the running.

Your profile is also where your reviews live. Research from BrightLocal's annual local consumer review survey has shown year after year that the large majority of people read online reviews before choosing a local business. Those reviews attach to your profile, not your website.

So a complete profile does three jobs at once. It gets you found, it builds trust, and it gives people a one tap way to call you.

What Is Inside the Guide

Part 1: Signing in and getting started

Which email account to use and why it matters so much. Whatever email creates the profile owns it. Moving ownership later means support tickets and waiting periods.

Part 2: The address and service area questions

This is where people get tripped up. If you run your business out of your home and travel to customers, you do not have to publish your home address. The guide walks you through exactly which button to click so your address stays private.

Part 3: Verification

Nothing goes live until Google confirms you are real. Lately that often means recording a short video on your phone. The guide tells you what to have ready before you hit record, and what to do if you get rejected the first time. Google also publishes its own verification help page if you want the official version.

Part 4: Filling the profile out properly

Most people stop the second they get verified. That is the mistake. A complete profile with a real description, a full service list, and ten or more photos beats a bare one every time. There is a fill in the blank description template in the guide.

Part 5: Keeping it alive

A profile nobody touches slowly slides down the results. Reviews, replies, posts, and a quarterly check take a few minutes and hold your spot.

—————————--

The Three Mistakes That Cause the Most Trouble

1. Setting it up under a personal Gmail. Use the business email. Every time.

2. Creating a second listing when one already exists. Google sometimes builds a listing for you from public data. If your business already shows up in the dropdown, claim it. Do not make a duplicate. Duplicates compete with each other and one of them usually gets suspended.

3. Stuffing keywords into the business name. Adding words like "Best Plumber Columbus" to your name violates Google's guidelines for representing your business and is one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended. Use your real name. The keywords belong in your description and services.

Avoid those three and the rest is mostly just filling in boxes.
