Nextdoor for Service Pros: How to Set It Up, Stay in the Feed, and Use Ads That Actually Work

If you fix things, clean things, build things, or sell homes in Central Ohio, Nextdoor might be the most underrated tool you're not using yet.

It's not Facebook. It's not Instagram.
It's the digital version of a neighbor leaning over the fence and saying, "Call this person, they're great."

And for service businesses, that word-of-mouth trust is gold. Let's walk through how it works, how to set it up, and how the ads really play out.

Why Nextdoor Is Built for Service Pros

Every Nextdoor user is a verified neighbor with a real address. Roughly three out of four are homeowners. That's a very different crowd than the open internet.

For trades and local pros, that matters:

✅ Plumbers, electricians, HVAC, cleaners, landscapers
✅ Painters, roofers, handymen, pest control
✅ Realtors, insurance agents, mortgage pros
✅ Anyone who works in a neighborhood, not just near it

When someone in Gahanna asks, "Anyone know a good painter?" — you want your name in that thread. Nextdoor is where that conversation happens. You can read more about who can join on Nextdoor's small business page.

How to Set Up Your Nextdoor Business Page

Good news: setting up your page is free. Here's the order I'd do it in.

1. Claim or create your page.
Go to business.nextdoor.com and search for your business. If it's there, claim it. If not, click "Create your Business Page." Start the process on the Business Page setup guide.

2. Verify your business.
You'll confirm by phone, email, or document upload. Verification is what lets you post to the neighborhood and show up in search.

3. Add your logo and a cover photo.
This one's not optional in my book. Pages with a logo get far more views than blank gray boxes. No logo yet? A clear photo of you, your truck, or your finished work works too.

4. Fill in every detail.
Name, address, phone, hours, website, and your service area. If you're licensed, add your license number — it builds instant trust.

5. Pick your categories (up to 10).
These tell Nextdoor when to show you in search. Don't skip them.

6. Write your "Story."
A few warm sentences about who you are and why you do this work. People support businesses they feel they know.

7. Add a photo gallery.
Before-and-afters, your team, finished jobs. Show, don't just tell.

Recommendations Are Your Secret Weapon

Here's the big one: on Nextdoor, recommendations are like reviews — but with a real neighbor's name attached.

You typically need at least one recommendation to even show up in neighborhood search. And businesses with recommendations get dramatically more page views than those without.

So after every happy job, ask. A simple text works:
"If you've got a Nextdoor account, a quick recommendation would mean the world to my small business." That's it.

Posting and "Getting Back Into the Feed"

This is where a lot of business owners get confused, so let's clear it up.

Your business page does not scroll the neighborhood feed.
Unlike a personal neighbor account, a Business Page can't sit and browse the newsfeed all day. You show up in the feed through Business Posts — you don't roam around in it.

You get 2 free Business Posts a month.
Those free posts land right in the neighborhood newsfeed and can reach neighbors within about 2 miles, or specific neighborhoods you choose. See Nextdoor's own business overview for the details.

One important setting: when you post, make sure your own neighborhood is selected — otherwise you won't even see your own post.

So how do you stay visible between those two free posts? Two ways:

□ Post valuable stuff people actually engage with
□ Run ads to extend your reach (more on that next)

And remember my golden rule of social media: a post nobody interacts with is just a poster on a wall in a dark alley. On Nextdoor, that means skip the constant sales pitch. Share a quick home-maintenance tip, a seasonal reminder, a local shout-out. Be helpful first, and the leads follow.

Nextdoor Ads, Explained in Plain English

Nextdoor ads work a little differently from Facebook. Here are the options, from smallest budget to biggest.

1. Local Deals — the budget-friendly starter.
These are coupon-style offers. They show up in the Local Deals section, on your page, and in neighbors' digest emails. They can start as low as a dollar or two per neighborhood, with most campaigns averaging around $75. You pay per neighborhood reached, not per click — so costs stay predictable. Great for a "$50 off your first service" type offer.

2. Neighborhood Sponsorships — own your category.
This makes you the go-to expert in a zip code for your category — say, the sponsored painter or realtor for that area. Each zip code has limited slots per category, so once you grab it, you're not fighting a dozen competitors. You also unlock extra features: polls, events, a message button, and posts that show in the feed even before you have recommendations. Pricing for local businesses generally runs about $32 to $150+ per month per zip code.

3. Self-serve / Promoted Posts — pay-per-click.
Nextdoor's Ads Manager runs a click-based auction, usually a few dollars per click, with no minimum spend. One thing to know: Nextdoor caps how many businesses advertise per zip code. If your area is saturated, you may have to wait for a slot to open.

4. Sponsored Posts — national brands only.
These run in the four- and five-figure-per-month range and are sold through Nextdoor's sales team. Not where a local service business needs to be — I'm only mentioning it so you know the tier exists. Learn more on the Nextdoor advertising page.

My honest take for most Central Ohio pros: start free, gather a few recommendations, then test a Local Deal or a single-neighborhood Sponsorship before spending big.

A Few Quick Do's and Don'ts

✅ Do reply to every comment and message fast
✅ Do thank people who recommend you
✅ Do post helpful, neighborly content
❌ Don't blast sales pitches all day
❌ Don't argue in the comments — ever
❌ Don't leave your page half-finished

How much does Nextdoor advertising cost for a small business in Central Ohio?
You can start free with a Business Page and two posts a month. Local Deals often average around $75, and Neighborhood Sponsorships typically run about $32 to $150+ per month per zip code, depending on your area.
